MIDI Noodle · Hands on gear

One keyboard. All your synths.

You've got one good keyboard and four synths. MIDI Noodle turns it into the controller for all of them: split the keys across three, pick a synth per song, change the whole setup between songs without touching a cable.

1. Split the keys into zones

Put a Keyboard Split on the cable from your controller. Each zone is a stretch of keys with its own channel, so bass, pads and lead each get their part of the keyboard.

Set a zone's first and last key by pressing them. Each zone can transpose too, so the bass sits an octave down while you play it in the middle of the keys.

Three zones on one strip: bass an octave down on channel 2, pads on 3, lead an octave up on 1.
For example:an 88-key Keystation plays a TB-3 bass with the left hand, and Juno pads and a Minilogue lead with the right.

2. A scene per song

The One controller, many synths wizard asks which keyboard and which synths, then builds one scene per synth. Each scene routes the keyboard to a different synth.

Scenes hold more than that: each has its own routes, sequencers and effects, so a whole song's setup switches in one go.

In Song 1 the keyboard plays the Prophet. Switch to Song 2 and the same keys play the Minilogue.

3. Switch from the controller

Pick the controller that switches scenes and give each scene a program number. A Program Change from its program buttons selects the scene, so your hands never leave the keys. The menu bar switches scenes too.

While the clock runs, a switch can wait for the next bar or the end of the chord progression, so the change lands on the one.

For example:PC 1 is the ballad on the Prophet, PC 2 the funk tune on the Minilogue, PC 3 both layered for the closer.

4. Swap synths mid-song

Scenes change the whole setup. To change just which synth the keys play, put a Channel Swapper on the cable. It sends everything out on the channel you pick, so with your synths on channels 1, 2 and 3 a tap moves the keys from one to the next.

Run a teal action cable from pads or spare keys on your controller to the Swapper's Swap to row, one press per channel. The presses never reach a synth. While the clock runs the swap waits for the next beat, and notes you're holding finish on the old synth.

For example:three pads on a KeyLab pick Juno, Minilogue or TB-3 for the solo, without leaving the song's scene.

5. Turn real knobs

Learn a knob on your controller, then plug it into an effect setting with a teal control cable: the arpeggiator's rate or gate, transpose amount, fixed velocity, or rest beats.

The setting follows the knob while you turn it.

For example:a spare knob on a KeyLab speeds the Juno's arpeggio up from 1/16 to 1/32 as the track builds.
