MIDI Noodle · Drum Sequencer

A beat on any drum machine, in seconds.

Pick a preset, cable it to your drum machine or sampler, press play. The Drum Sequencer runs from the Mac, in time with everything else.

Start from a preset

Rock, Half-time, House, Techno, Disco, Hip-hop, Breakbeat, Funk, Reggae One-drop, Trap and Shuffle are ready to go, each with its own fill. Load one, then make it yours: up to 16 rows and 32 steps, at any rate from 1/2 to 1/32.

Save your own beats as presets. They're shared by every project.

For example:load House on a TR-8S on channel 10, swap the clap for a rim shot and save it as "My Beat".

Accents and ghost notes

Each step can be an accent, a normal hit or a soft ghost note, so a beat has dynamics instead of every hit at the same velocity.

Swing it

Swing pushes every second step late, from 50% (straight) to 75%. It's one setting in the transport panel and every sequencer in the patch follows it, so the drums and the bass line swing together.

Fills and Random

Every preset has a fill. Let it play on the last pass of every 2, 4, 8 or 16, or tap the sparkle on the card (or press F) to drop it in on the next pass.

Random works like a drum machine's Random button: while it's on, each pass plays fresh variations of the rows you choose. Your written steps never change.

The sparkle on the card plays the fill on the next pass.

A colour for every drum

Each row's steps take the colour of its drum: kick red, snare and clap orange, closed hat yellow, open hat teal, with toms, cymbals and percussion in colours of their own. MIDI Noodle reads the drum from the row's name ("BD", "Ride Bell") or its General MIDI note, so a busy grid reads at a glance. Turn it off in Settings › Coloured sequencers for every step in yellow.

Knows your pads

Rows start on the General MIDI drum kit. Cable the sequencer to an MPC, an Akai MPD218 or an MPK mini and MIDI Noodle offers that device's pad map, so rows are named after the pads you actually hit.
