Theory, complete. Practice with a goal. Scale and chord practice can now finish for you when you hit a goal, four new chapters fill the last theory gaps and turn them into playing, progression examples in lessons become play-alongs, Practice shows real engraved notation, finished lessons hand you a real piece to play, and you can plan your whole practice week. Plus hand-aware finger badges, octave-friendly exercises, and a long list of fixes.

Practice Goals

Practice with a goal.

Scale and chord practice can now finish for you instead of running forever. Pick a number of clean laps, a few minutes, a target accuracy, or a tempo, and a progress bar tracks you as you play.

Practice plan deep dive →

Theory, Complete

Four new chapters.

Melody & Form, Playing Songs with Chords, Song Form, and Getting More from the App fill the last gaps and turn theory into playing. Look for the NEW badge in Learn.

Engraved Practice

See what you are playing.

Practice now shows real notation, and the new Play-Along Staff follows the music in Play and Practice, with proper beams, rests, ties, slurs, and accidentals.

Play-Along Lessons

Lessons you play.

Progression examples inside lessons are now play-alongs. Each bar fills green as you play its chord.

Repertoire

Now play the real thing.

Finish a lesson and it hands you a real piece that uses exactly what you just learned, like Ode to Joy, Für Elise, and Minuet in G.

Practice Schedule

Plan your week.

Set your practice days, a reminder time, and how long to spend in each area, then add the whole plan to your calendar.

Practice with a goal

Scale and chord practice no longer has to run until you stop it.

  • Completion and Mastery goals

Pick a Completion goal (a set number of clean laps, or a few minutes of practice) or a Mastery goal (a target accuracy, or a target tempo with an accuracy gate). Or keep practicing open-ended, as before.

  • A progress bar as you play

A goal bar tracks how close you are while you practice, so you always know how much is left.

  • A next step when you get there

Reaching the goal ends the session for you and suggests what to try next.

Theory, complete

Four new chapters fill the last gaps in the curriculum and turn theory into playing.

  • Melody & Form

How melodies are decorated, shaped, and structured: passing and neighbor tones, suspensions and other embellishments, phrases and periods, and binary and ternary form. Part of Advanced Theory.

  • Playing Songs with Chords

Turn a chord progression into a song you can play: the four-chord song, more pop progressions, reading a chord chart, accompaniment patterns, and transposing to a key you can sing in. Part of Advanced Theory.

  • Song Form

How songs are built: verse and chorus, the classic AABA 32-bar form, and the 12-bar blues. Part of Core Theory.

  • Getting More from the App

Free tutorials on Play's power features: the key reference and chord sidebar, building progressions, changing inversions with the Bass control, and per-chord Block, Arpeggio, and Strum play modes.

  • Chord Functions, and shapes, not just notes

A new Chord Functions lesson explains why I, IV, and V pull the way they do. New shape-first lessons teach intervals as keyboard reaches, black-key landmarks, and moveable scale and chord shapes, so patterns carry to any key. A new NEW badge marks fresh chapters in Learn until you open them.

Lessons you play, and pieces to play next

Theory now turns into music under your hands.

  • Play-along progressions

Progression examples inside a lesson appear as stacked chords on the staff with their chord names and Roman numerals. Each bar fills green as you play its chord, Play demos the whole progression, and tapping a single chord auditions it. Continue lights up once you've played the whole progression yourself.

  • Now play the real thing

Finish a lesson and it hands you a real piece that uses exactly what you just learned: Ode to Joy after your first four-chord progression, Für Elise after passing tones, Minuet in G after form, and more. All are public domain and included, and they light up in the Songbook as you unlock them.

See what you are playing, engraved

Practice now reads like real sheet music.

  • Whole drills on a grand staff

Short drills engrave the whole exercise on a grand staff with the current note highlighted. Scale runs show your whole path, with the notes you've already played dimmed, and long runs scroll themselves to keep your place in view.

  • Play-Along Staff

A new scrolling reading surface follows the music in both Play and Practice, highlighting the current bar as it goes, inline or full screen.

  • Proper engraving

Beams, rests, ties, slurs, and key-aware accidentals are engraved properly, and rests now draw in the bundled music font instead of showing as empty boxes.

Plan your week

A practice schedule that fits your week.

  • Days, time, and focus areas

Set your practice days, a reminder time, and how long you want to spend on Learn, Listen, Practice, Play, and Compose. Your daily goal becomes the total.

  • Today's Plan

A Today's Plan card shows how you're doing in each area at a glance.

  • Add it to your calendar

Add the whole plan to your calendar as a recurring event, so your sessions sit alongside your other plans. Find it in Settings, Progress & Notifications, Practice schedule.

Also in 2.7

Smarter practice, friendlier pickers, and a long list of fixes.

  • Finger badges show which hand

Every finger badge now carries a hand glyph and color: purple for the left hand, blue for the right. Scale Practice gained a Right/Left fingering setting, so you can practice scales left-handed with the standard fingering.

  • Two-Hand Drills go both ways

Parallel Scale, Scale + Bass Drone, and Contrary Scale can now run ascending, descending, or up and back down.

  • Any octave, any inversion

Notes, phrases, and chords in Play & Explore and lesson exercises now count wherever you play them on the keyboard, and chords count in any inversion. Lessons that specifically teach register still ask for the exact key.

  • Key, Scale, and Chord pickers match

All three pickers now share one shape, with tabs across the top and consistent note spelling, so sharp keys no longer offer odd names like B-sharp.

  • Turn off Easter eggs

A new switch in Settings under General stops hidden songs from appearing while you play. It's on the Easter egg sheet too, and eggs you've already found stay in your collection.

  • Ready for any screen

Layouts now adapt to the window's size and shape instead of the device type, ready for iPhone Duo.

  • Lesson fixes

Lesson keyboards that never appeared now show up, finishing one lesson no longer marks an unrelated lesson complete, tappable theory terms all work again, and a set of music-theory corrections tighten up the curriculum. What's New no longer reappears after you swipe it away.
